Transformative Travel is when a trip becomes much more than just a vacation, its’ a travel experience that impacts you on multiple levels mentally and spiritually transforming how you see yourself and the world. It’s a soulful and a soul “full” experience, filling your soul with joy, wonder and a greater purpose through expanding your mind and releasing your fears and inhibitions to embrace something different.
When I travel, whether internationally or domestically, I make sure it will be transformative by being open to new experiences and adventures. I try to learn something that I didn’t know before I got there. I discover new things about not only my destination location, but also about myself. I challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone and embrace the experience.
There’s something about traveling to somewhere that I’ve never been before. There’s an excitement an anticipation of what’s next to go and explore. My travel philosophy is based on 3 words: Explore, Experience, Discover.
EXPLORE New Cultures
Exploring new cultures through global travel can be a life changing experience. You can learn new languages, try exotic local foods, interact with people who are happy to share their culture with you. The impact it can make on you can last a lifetime as it can make you see your life from a completely new perspective. Opening yourself up to someplace new, different and unfamiliar can be uncomfortable for some at first, but if you allow yourself to embrace the experience it can be life changing. I must say that my experiences in Africa while in Nigeria where I got to eat local foods like Suya and was made a traditional dress by some of the women in the village or when I was in Senegal, I had to dust off my long forgotten high school French lessons to try to speak to the locals as they smiled and helped me through it were experiences that have stayed with me long after the trips were over. When I was in Malaysia trying to navigate around Kuala Lumpur, I found myself bargaining with a man at the local food market when I was trying buy some fish and vegetables. These are experiences that you can’t get out of a book or a video, you have to be there and it impacts your life in so many different ways.
Experiencing adventures is such an integral part of the travel experience. If you’re going to do the same things that you do when you’re at home, then you might as well stay home. The point of traveling is to see what you haven’t seen before and do what you haven’t done before. You don’t have to be an adventure junkie to experience adventures. Everyone’s sense of adventure is different. Some might what to jump out of an airplane and others might just like to go on a tour to see some local sights, either of these adventures or anything in between is perfectly acceptable. It’s just important to try new things and get a bit outside of your comfort zone, after all you are on vacation. I always try to find an adventure at each destination that tests my resolve a bit. I’m no daredevil but, I like a bit of adventure. Some of my bucket list items have been checked off as I have experienced adventures all around the world. I went zip-lining in Costa Rica, jet-skiing in Jamaica, climbed all 272 steps at Batu Caves in Malaysia which was a very spiritual and inspiring adventure.
Self reflection is so important and it’s surprising how often it happens when traveling. Often times as we see new places, experience new experiences, encounter other people who have traveled or local people in a different culture it often makes you begin to contemplate our own life. It’s a beautiful thing because we all need to do some self discovery and sometimes it takes for us to get out of our normal environment and routine to realize things that we never thought about before because we were too busy or not giving our thoughts the attention they deserve. Travel is often a window to the soul and it allows us to see things that we couldn’t see about ourselves. It may give you a greater appreciation about your life or make you decide to go in a new direction. It’s amazing how it happens, a little time with just you, your thoughts and an inspirational setting can unlock so many thoughts and ideas on everything imaginable. Give it a try, there’s nothing to loose by getting lost in thought by opening yourself up to whatever the world has in store for you.
Enjoy the Journey.
